Meekness

An essay on how to inherit the earth

Cambridge's dictionary defines meek as "quiet, gentle, and not willing to argue or express your opinions in a forceful way," with synonyms such as mild, submissive, and moderate. The word meek has evolved into a simple extension of the word weak.

However, Matthew 5:5 reads, "Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth." It does not seem obvious that the submissive and the mild will inherit the earth, or those who "are not willing to express their opinions in a forceful way" will either.

Diving deeper into the verse and the original texts, a different definition is evident.

Meek is not quiet or gentle. It is loud, disastrous, dominant, explosive, and under control. It is having and knowing how to use your sword yet keeping it sheathed—the mighty warrior who calmly tends to his garden, not the gardener who lies frozen in battle.

There is no blessing in ignorance. The weak who cannot kill are not better than those who have, for who is to say what they would have done given the ability?

True character is tested in non-consequential environments. Only then will you know your heart's desires. When they are free to run unhinged and manifest themselves around you. Who you are continues to reveal itself day by day, and your fear of your own unknown will keep things from you.

What positions of authority? What power? What blessings will the divine sense of self withhold because you cannot wield its strength? What will you keep from yourself because you fear what may become of you?

The universe is a quiet subconscious machine, and it will control you until you begin to tap into it and make it conscious, for that is the only realm in which you can exercise control.

The unwanted hides in the fog until circumstance uncovers it.

So, search where you least want to look. Search in the crevices of your heart that you are most afraid of. The darkest corners of this world are the most ripe with the opportunity to shine a light. Overcome the darkness before it overcomes you. Then it will be too late, for you will be unaware until it has already manifested itself around you.

I tell you, great blessings are found behind monstrosity overcome.

Better and more capable is the monster in control than the naive boy who waits for the monster to control him.

This is true meekness, I tell you, that men embrace their chaotic nature and set order to it.

So blessed are those who have overcome their nature, for they shall inherit the earth.

The men who do as they should despite having every right and ability to walk away.

Be strong, gentlemen, not mild. Assertive, not submissive. Be the corrupted monster this flesh has caged us all in but chose good every time.

This is true meekness.
