The Originality of Greatness

“No one was ever great by imitation.” -Rasselas
Regardless of the many great attributes we practice from others, we will never be great without adding our own.
Our act will wash up when tested for our relationship with the attribute is shallow.
Only our own attributes that we hone and purify will survive the storm.
You cannot achieve greatness by simply replaying the past.
The only way for you to achieve it is to grow into your own person and become great yourself.
If you let yourself become an echo of the past, you will die because you will have sacrificed your life to whatever it is that takes your place.
And though breath is in your lungs, your mind has surrendered control, and death has swallowed your soul.
The world is a harsh place, and it will force you to conform to it.
It will attempt to make you one with it, and you will lose independence, and it will no longer be you but society living through you.
Focus on mastering who you are instead of trying to imitate others.
Imitation only goes so far.
For how can nobility come from a corrupt mind?
How can truth come from a deceitful heart?
Mere acts will not suffice when it matters most.
You do not know these attributes, and they are merely screens.
When push comes to shove, your veil will be torn, and your instincts will have their way.
This ruthless world will verify and test your work; if it does survive, you may not either.
Seek a life of originality and authenticity lest you fall in the snares of imitation and deceit.
Many will disregard this warning and claim that a deceitful life is more than viable and that many have used it to accrue wealth and power.
But I tell you that it is not them who have that life but the ideologies and lies themselves.
The lies have accrued wealth and power in exchange for their life.
Do not be a fool to think that you can profit off your lies without dying to them. You cannot fool others without fooling yourself.
You cannot wear two masks.
You might think you can retain your identity behind closed doors, but your mask will swallow you whole.
Not all lies are out of malice, but all lies lead to death.
Even those who copy the great in an attempt to be great themselves fail because it is still the greatness they copy that is great, not them.
Their act might be great, but they themselves are not.
The sad truth is that no one is coming to save you. You must forge your own greatness.
That is the uncomfortable truth for the select few.
Copying others only does you and the rest of society a disfavor.
That is the yoke thrust upon the select few.
They cannot idle without directly harming society, for they move it forward.
So, come to terms with reality and admit the responsibility.
More on that next week.
